Templemore Mart’s general cattle sale on Thursday witnessed good demand for quality dairy-bred bullocks and heifers, while there was also more bite for slaughter-fit cows.

Bullocks in the 500kg to 600kg weight bracket comprised mainly Friesian types, with prices ranging from €3.60/kg to €3.80/kg.

There were some good-quality Angus-cross and Hereford-cross bullocks of a similar weight coming two years of age with good weight for age and these sold from €3.80/kg to €4/kg.

It was a similar trend for bullocks weighing 400kg to 500kg, but with a wider price range.

Friesian bullocks sold from €3.55/kg to €3.75/kg, while Angus- and Hereford-crosses sold from €3.70/kg for plainer-quality types to €4.15/kg for the best-quality lots.

There was a similarly wide price range for Hereford-cross heifers weighing 400kg to 500kg, with prices ranging from €3.56/kg to €3.92/kg.

There was some well-fleshed heifers weighing from 500kg to 600kg and these attracted keen interest from factory agents and specialist finishers, with prices ranging from €3.80/kg to €4/kg. There was a small number of continental cattle on offer and these ranged in price from €4.20/kg all the way to €5/kg for quality Limousin heifers.

Cull cows

Around one quarter of the entry of about 200 head comprised cows, with the majority of these possessing a good cover of flesh and suitable for slaughter.

The trade for such cows was solid, with prices ranging from €2.45/kg to €2.60/kg for some plainer-quality lots, while better-conformed Friesian cows sold from €2.70/kg to €2.90/kg.

A smaller number of lighter Friesian and Friesian-cross cows weighing from 400kg to 500kg sold from €2.60/kg to €2.75/kg.

At an average weight of 603kg, these Aberdeen Angus-cross heifers sold for €2,400 (€3.98/kg).

Weighing 510kg, this Aberdeen Angus-cross heifer born 18/03/24 sold for €1,990 (€3.90/kg).

This good-quality Limousin-cross heifer weighing 390kg and born 23/10/24 sold for €1,930 (€4.95/kg).
