Some farmers say the incidence of coughing in cows has increased, while others say since they started vaccinating for other diseases the incidence is less.
Veterinary evidence printed in the Irish Veterinary Journal (IVJ) shows an increase in the incidence of lungworm in adult cattle in Ireland, the UK and Europe.
What should farmers do when they diagnose coughing cows?
Some say the use of long-acting anthelmintics may be preventing the development of immunity to lungworm. Others say dairy farmers should be vaccinating to prevent lungworm.
Professor Neil Sargison from Edinburgh Veterinary College will discuss the coughing cow and the role of lungworm at a meeting tonight in Corrin Mart, Fermoy, Co Cork.
Sargison grew up on a dairy farm and has worked as a farm animal veterinary practitioner in Scotland and New Zealand since graduating from the Cambridge University Veterinary School in 1984.
Following his presentation, Doreen Corridan from Munster AI will describe what the company is seeing from the results of bulk tank testing, which has started on many dairy farms over the last number of years.
Vet and farmer meeting, Corrin Mart, Fermoy, Co Cork, tonight starting at 7.30pm.
