Since early Saturday morning ESB crews have been dealing with a large number of faults, and power was restored to around 11,000 customers throughout the day. However as the strong gales persisted during the day, additional faults occurred and there are currently 1,700 customers without power, ESB says. These are mainly in Cong and Glenbeigh, with smaller numbers in Bandon, Tuam, Foynes, Arklow and Limerick. Some customers in Crossmolina are without power due to flooding, when the River Deale burst its banks.

The River Nenagh has also burst its banks and is flooding farmland at Templederry as this picture from a reader shows:

Technicians will continue to work into the evening to deal with around 150 separate faults, while it is safe to do so. It is expected that power will be restored to most customers currently affected later this evening.

ESB has reiterated its warning to customers never to approach or touch fallen wires and says thank you to those people who have reported fallen wires on 1850 372 999.

The forecast from Met Éireann for Saturday night is for further heavy falls of rain, especially in the southwest, west and north, with further flooding. It will also remain very windy.

Thankfully Sunday will be a bright and mostly dry day, with sunny spells and just a few isolated showers. Winds will be mostly light, but wet and windy weather will extend from the southwest and south during Sunday evening and early Sunday night.

However, Sunday night will see a band of rain spread northwards across the country, and winds veering southerly will become very strong and gusty once again. Met Éireann says this new wet spell will maintain the threat of flooding in many areas.
