The IFA announced on Thursday that there was a strong demand for pigs as supplies continue to tighten, and was anticipating prices to significantly increase in Friday’s report.

This week’s prices have risen for Classes S, E and R; with piglet fees increasing also.

  • Class S carcase prices have risen to €1.645/kg; meaning 0.7% of an increase on last week’s amount, a 7.1% hike on last month’s figure and a 10.1% increase on this time last year.
  • Class E carcase prices rose to €1.615/kg; that is 0.5% of an increase on last week’s figures, 7.2% growth on last month’s amount and a 12.3% jump on this time last year.
  • The price of a Class R carcase was €1.785/kg; 1% up on last week, 6.6% up on this time last month and a 5.9% surge on July of last year.
  • Meanwhile, piglet prices saw a slight decrease on last week’s prices with a fall to €44.37/head, 0.1% down on last week, 4.4% up on last month and, overall, 20.77 higher than last year.

    On the up

    In line with trends in recent months, pig prices are on an upward spiral.

    The average price of carcases has risen hugely since May; the average price per kilo has increased from €1.30 to €1.60 in the past two months.

    Carcase prices for 2016 remain higher than 2015, but still fall behind 2014 figures.

    In addition, piglet prices have risen from €40/head in May to almost €45 in July. These prices remain also remain higher than 2015 prices, but below 2014 prices.
