Gabriel Sloyan of Victoria Farms saw strong competition realise some top prices for maiden, in-calf heifers and cow and calf pairs at the farm’s third annual sale held in Elphin on Friday last. There was a 100% clearance rate in the in-calf heifers and cow and calf teams.

In-calf heifers made up the bulk of the consignment of cattle, with 41 heifers achieving an impressive average of €3,960/head.

Heifers had been AI-ed with sexed Elderberry Glahad (EBY) semen from Dovea Genetics, with many scanned carrying heifer calfs.

Top price in the in-calf heifers was a Limousin-cross heifer born in April 2020 scanned with an EBY heifer calf due in February selling for €8,500.

Cow-and-calf pairs saw some of the highest prices of the night.

Top price went to a Charolais-cross cow, born 2018 with a Belgian Blue bull calf at foot and back in-calf to the same bull carrying a heifer that sold for €8,800.

Cow-and-calf pairs averaged €5,593/head.

Many of the maiden heifers went unsold on the night, with Gabriel choosing to put these in-calf himself and offer for sale at next year’s sale.

Top price in the maidens was a Belgian Blue-cross heifer, born January 2021 and weighing 660kg selling for €7,600 (€11.52/kg).
