Look, let’s face facts; now isn’t exactly the sunniest, brightest time, with another lockdown under way.
But, there’s not too much we can do about it, bar follow the rules and wash our hands.
What we can do is try to improve our mood, so doing things that make us feel good.
In honour of this, here are the ultimate pick-me-up podcasts that are sure to give you a good laugh. We all need one.
So, whether you’re a podcast connoisseur or a newbie, get your headphones and give these a try. It’ll make you smile.
The 2 Johnnies Podcast
Comedy duo The 2 Johnnies are renowned for their podcast. If you’re into podcasts, it’s likely you’ve heard of it. It’s a constant in the top spot on the podcast charts. From start to finish it’s hilarious. They start off with readers’ correspondence, discuss a topic, suckler farmer and hurling aficionado Noel Furlong is the news editor, producer Maura Fay (formerly of this parish) brings her mystery topic and they round off with their yurts and durts of the week. In other words, it’s a skit.
The Tommy and Hector Podcast with Laurita Blewitt
This podcast started at the beginning of September and it’s the one everyone is talking about right now. It’s pretty much old friends just sitting down for a big long chat, but when the old friends are Tommy Tiernan and Hector Ó hEochagáin, things get pretty entertaining. Mayo woman Laurita Blewitt is a breath of fresh air in the mix too. If you’re looking for easy listening, this is a great shout. Just pop it on and relax.
I’m Grand Mam
I’m Grand Mam blew up during the last lockdown when the hosts managed to nab an interview with Paul Mescal of Normal People fame. They secured the interview for good reason though, Mescal himself was a fan. New listeners were enticed to listen back and were not disappointed. PJ Kirby and Kevin Twomey are two lads from Cork, living in London. Their discussions are very conversational, generally revolving around a central theme and are absolutely hilarious. As well as having a laugh, they also explore the landmarks that accompany growing up gay in the world today.
Laughs of Your Life
As the name suggests, the premise of Doireann Garrihy’s podcast Laughs of Your Life is the moments in life that are funny and memorable. She interviews her guests under this guise and always gets very high-profile interviewees. She recently had former Irish Country Living cover star Trish Lewis on. Other recent guests include Paul Mescal, The 2 Johnnies, Simon Harris and Jason Byrne.
Podcasts are available across a range of platforms. Spotify and iTunes are two of the main ones. You can download these apps on your smartphone, but you must have an iPhone to access iTunes. Often a podcast will also have its own website where you can listen to the episodes.
Don’t forget
The Irish Farmers Journal Weekly Podcast and Down to Agribusiness Podcast can be accessed here. They’re also available on iTunes and Spotify.
