An “exceptionally strong” line-up of entries for the 2025 Flahavan's oat grower of the year saw farmers from counties Cork and Tipperary edge out competition.

The winner of the conventional category was Co Cork’s Martin O’Regan, while the organic award went to Co Tipperary’s James O’Connell.

O’Regan was commended as a “standout contributor year after year” combining to consistently produce “exceptionally clean grain”.

The judges praised O’Connell’s bushel weights coming in at above 60kph as evidence of a combination of a technical approach to crop agronomy with a “deep respect for the land”.

Quality

Judging was carried out by Teagasc tillage specialist Ciarán Collins for the conventional category and Teagasc organic tillage specialist Martin Bourke for organic contenders.

Entries were judged on grain quality indicators, including kernel content, bushel weight, moisture, aroma, flavour, colour and cleanliness.

Finalists were then evaluated for grower excellence, which assessed their knowledge of agronomy, field practice and commitment to environmental sustainability.

“Our growers play a crucial role in everything we do,” the oat manufacturer’s operations manager Johnny Flahavan said.

“Their knowledge, hard work and commitment to doing things the right way mean we can continue to deliver consistent, high-quality Irish oats to our customers at home and abroad.

“We’re pleased to recognise this year’s winners and we appreciate the ongoing effort from all growers across the country.”
