Another 15,000t of straw was imported into the country in September, October and November 2025.

Data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows that in total from January to November 2025 (inclusive), 55,394t of straw was imported into Ireland.

It should be noted that imports are down slightly on 2024. January to November 2025 imports totalled 57,913t.This is up from 40,068t from January to August (inclusive).

From January to November 2025, 20,266t of straw came from Britain, 16,878t came from Northern Ireland - most of which probably originated in Britain - and 17,542t came from Spain.

Smaller amounts came from Belgium, France, Germany, India, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands and other parts of the EU.

British imports are down 7,157t from the same time last year, while Spanish imports are up 5,088t for that period. Northern Ireland figures are fairly similar.

The straw is not subject to phytosanitary checks and carries a major biosecurity risk for Irish farms. Meanwhile, Irish straw sits across the country in sheds at present.
