Bedfordia Farms, based in Bedfordshire, farm in the region of 2,425ha (5,992ac) near its base in Milton Ernest. The business also contract farms an additional 1,400ha (3,460 ac) near Leicester.

Farming what is predominately heavy land, the firm has invested in four new tractors, three of which are identical John Deere 6250Rs shod on Michelin’s latest AxioBib 2 VF tyres to help reduce soil compaction.

The farm operates a fleet of 14 tractors ranging from 120-620hp. Alongside the three new 6250R tractors, a 6155R was added too.

With 80% of the farm work carried out with under 230hp, the 6250R was a perfect fit for the fleet based on its year-round suitability for almost any task and good power-to-weight ratio.

Tyre difference

The three 6250Rs were the first in the UK to be fitted with 650/85R38 and 600/70R30 Michelin AxioBib 2 tyres with VF technology. Compared to standard tyres, the AxioBib 2 VF can operate at 40% less pressure or carry 40% extra load at a similar pressure, while also achieving 28-35% more traction, 7-10% increased productivity and a potential 4% yield increase from the enhanced soil protection, according to Michelin.

Having weighed the tractors and implements, it was calculated that an inflation of 9psi was all that was required for all operations. However, Michelin recommend an inflation pressure of 15psi for road transport to improve for improved comfort and wear characteristics.
