Almost 2,200 heavy bulls were loaded for export to Libya last week at Waterford by Purcell Brothers.
This consignment was made up of half continental beef breeds and half Friesians, at weights of up to 650kg, and is the most recent of a number of orders Purcell Brothers has shipped to Libya in recent months.
The cattle were brought from farm of origin to the exporter's assembly yard at Waterford to be checked by the Department of Agriculture and cleared for export.
This involved checks on each animal's identity, health and welfare and certification that the animal was tested or vaccinated, as relevant, for specific diseases.
The bulls were then brought to the port and loaded on to the boat. On board they were penned in their original groups, to minimise stress.
Purcell Brothers told the Irish Farmers Journal that clearance of stock and subsequent loading ran quickly and without hitch.
This was the third boat of bulls exported from Ireland to Libya in 2020 and brings the total number of animals exported there this year to over 5,700 head.
