A new world record was set at an online auction held by Farmers Marts Dolgellau last week, when an 11 month-old Welsh-bred sheepdog, Kim, sold for a mammoth £27,100 (€30,934). The price for Kim, including buyer’s premium, totalled £28,466 (€32,491).

Sheepdog Kim was bred and trained by Dewi Jenkins and is from Caefelin Clem, sired by Graylees Dollar and is described as a smart red-and-white pricked-ear dog. It is said her new owners, E Vaughan of Partridge Nest Farm in Newcastle, Staffordshire, will be very pleased with her.

Second-highest price for a working dog

Securing the second-highest price at the online auction was achieved for sheepdog Burndale Joy, bred by D Henderson of Low Struthers, Hexham, which sold for £16,400 (€18,713). Burndale Joy is described as an exceptional work and trial dog and was purchased by and undisclosed bidder.

Third-highest price for a working dog

Sheepdog trainer and breeder K Evans of Llwynfedwen, Brecon, achieved the third-highest price for his top-quality, fully-trained bitch, Wheatwood Ru, which was purchased by Willie Davies and Sophia Chambers of Usk Vale Pedigrees for a cool £16,100 (€18,372).

Irish working dogs

Sheepdog enthusiast J Hamilton of Glenarm, Co Antrim, saw his dog, Mo, sell for a respectable £8,000 (€9,129), while two-year-old bitch, Jan, trained by Martin Naughton of Crossmolina, Co Mayo, sold for £4,200 (€4,795). Kerryman Tom O’Sullivan of North Hill Sheepdogs in Killarney received £3,650 (€4,167), for his sheepdog Fritz.

The online auction was held on 3 February, and included 165 lots, which were comprised of 65 trained sheepdogs, 36 partly trained sheepdogs and 25 pups. Overall, the trade and demand for dogs of all capabilities was strong, which resulted in an 80% clearance rate.

The next sale of working dogs will be held via an online auction on 5 May 2021, with entries open 29 March.
