On Saturday Carrigallen mart held its weekly weanling sale where it saw a special entry from Jim Heery who held his annual homebred weanling heifer sale containing 72 heifer weanlings.
The heifers consisted of 72 heifers born in spring 2025, the heifers were all scanned suitable for breeding and consisted of mainly Belgian Blue and Limousin heifers sired by AI and stockbulls.
Top priced heifer weighing 405kg this Belgian Blue-cross heifer born in July 2025 sold for €7,700 (€19.01/kg).
The 72 heifers met a full clearance with a top price of €7,700 for a roan-coloured Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 405kg. There was a fantastic trade for the heifers with over one third of the heifers heading to northern buyers which helped Jim achieve a average of €3,500. Seven heifers crossed the €5,000 price tag with a further ten weanling heifers selling for over €4,000.

Mart manager Helen Kells commented on the trade “There was a fantastic display of heifers on offer with people traveling from all over to purchase, heifers sold from Galway to Carlow to Down with a good number staying local also. We had very high online activity with the mart ring full of buyers”
There was over 2,300 Martbids views on the sale Saturday with 25% of cattle purchased by online bidders.
In the general sale on Saturday, weanling bulls and heifers continued to remain a strong trade the last number of weeks. Consisting of the the top third of weanlings crossing the €5.50/kg with over €6/kg to be got for the top-end weanlings, with continued strong demand from exporters and farmers purchasing for summer grazing.
"We had a easier trade for the suck calves this week with less shipper activity leading to a stickier trade" commented Helen.
