The time has come when marts’ throughput has started to increase and this has definitely been the case in Portumna Mart over the past few weeks.

In excess of 300 cattle were forward in the last two weeks with a similar number expected in the weeks coming.

This spring 2019-born Charolais heifer weighed 480kg and sold for €1,070 (€2.23/kg).

Speaking following this week’s sale, auctioneer Francis Egan said: “Sale numbers are up on the week, but also on this time last year. Overall, we’d consider it a very good trade for the numbers coming through.

This April 2019-born Charolais heifer weighed 460kg and sold for €970 (€2.11/kg).

Overage and out-of-spec cattle are getting a bit trickier, but there’s very strong demand ringside for 2019-born cattle.”

In the heifer ring, traditional breeds generally came into the €1.80/kg to €2/kg mark. Continentals overage or out of spec started at €2/kg, but went as high as €2.60kg for the right type.

This rising two-year-old Limousin heifer weighed 470kg and sold for €1,110 (€2.36/kg).

Securing this top price was a group of Charolais autumn 2019-born heifers with an average weight of 331kg which sold for €860. Between €2.40/kg and €2.50/kg wasn’t uncommon for the fleshy types.

The bullocks proved a similar story, with 2019-born cattle a very good trade, but older cattle were harder sold.

This 10-year-old Hereford bull weighed 935kg and sold for €1,450 (€1.55/kg).

Continental bullocks ranged between €2/kg and €2.50/kg, while good square Angus and Hereford bullocks were back that bit to €1.80/kg to €2.10/kg.

This 2014-born Limousin cow weighed 585kg and sold for €1,010 (€1.73/kg).

Friesian bullocks proved more difficult, with stock back about €30 to €40 per head, and even slightly more for the plainer types.

Top of the bullocks was a pair of 13-month-old Charolais who weighed 310kg and sold for €2.52/kg (€780).
