On Friday 4 December, Michael Doyle Auctions held a clearance machinery auction at Tankardstown, Tullow, Co Carlow. The auction consisted of over 140 entries from several local farmers.

Bidding took place online via the Marteye app. This was Doyle’s first completely online auction. He noted that the auction saw over 400 bidders register, with a further 300 onlookers. Phone bidding also played a role at the auction.

To try to accommodate those who don’t have time for a midday auction, Michael scheduled the auction at 7pm in the evening, a move which he claims worked very well and he intends to replicate this at his next auction, which is set to take place on 28 December.

The lots on offer included a selection of tractors, farm machinery, tools, plant and livestock equipment. A 90% clearance rate was achieved, with a one-owner 1996 Massey Ferguson 390T (hi-line cab) with just 4,800 hours stealing the show, eventually being knocked down to the highest bidder from the west for €24,100 plus commission (no VAT). Commission was charged at a rate of 10% for items sold below €1,000 and 5% for items sold above €1,000.
