There are a multitude of ways in which we can define our eyes by using makeup, but all that mascara, liner, shadow, contour and highlighter can get incredibly confusing. So here are a few quick and easy makeup tips and products to make your eyes really sparkle and shine.

If you have close-set eyes

If you feel that you have close-set eyes, what you need to do is elongate them to balance out the face. I love the Kat Von D “Tattoo Liner” liquid liner (priced at €18.90 from stockists including Debenhams – price correct at time of going to press). Draw along your lash line and create a classic and subtle feline flick at the ends of the eye, like a small tick.

Blend a little gold eyeshadow into the inner corners of the eyes, then lilac tones towards the outer edges of the eye socket. I adore the Inglot range: their fabulous range of punchy colours at just €6 each from www.inglot.ie work a treat. Once the colour is applied to the eye socket, this will draw the eyes outwards.

Using a concealer under the eyes will brighten up the eye. I find Charlotte Tilbury’s Retoucher conceal and treat stick (from stockists including Brown Thomas) at €33 amazing for concealing dark eye bags/shadows.

If you have round eyes

If you have small, round eyes then you might want to create a more almond shape to make them look bigger and brighter.

I use a light pearly shadow on the eyelid. Maybelline’s The Burgundy Bar Eyeshadow palette (from stockists including www.mccabespharmacy.com) at €15.00 is full of vanilla, gold and cranberry soft colours with a light and natural sheen.

I then use a liquid liner, such as NYX professional liquid eyeliner (from stockists including www.boots.ie) at €7.75, to draw a thin line along the upper lash line and over the outer edge of the eye. Next, I dab a small amount of brown eyeshadow onto a cotton bud and apply along the liquid eye line, particularly on the outer edge. This technique really opens up the eyes.

Now lash on plenty of mascara, particularly to the outer edge of the eye. Maybelline has a new coconut-infused mascara, Total Temptation (from stockists including www.boots.ie at €12.99), which leaves the lashes clump-free, lush and full, while also lifting them.

I also like to add a dab of gold Wunder2 Glitter Gelly from www.wunder2.eu at €15.95 all over the eye socket and to the outer edge of the brow bone, creating that almond shape.

If you have hooded eyes

The secret of bringing colour and lift to hooded eyes is to use a light shadow on the whole eye area, rather than just the lids. I then recommend blending brown/lilac shades from NYX Professional Make-up Lid Lingerie Shadow Palette (available from stockists including www.boots.ie at €10.50), into the crease of the lid and below the bottom eyelashes.

Always blend eyeliner well to soften the look. Harsh lines will make eyes look smaller. If you currently use a black liner, I would advise you change to bronze/brown. Rimmel’s ScandalEyes (from stockists including www.mccabespharmacy.com at €5.50) is great. Plenty of mascara on the top lashes will finish the look.

If you have thin eyebrows

If you fill in a sparse brow with an eye shadow rather than a pencil, it’s a much softer, more natural effect. Bobbi Brown’s eyeshadow in “saddle” (from stockists including Debenhams at €21.60) applied with a small brow brush will make an enormous difference by restoring the frame around the eyes.

Then cover the whole eye area with Inglot’s Intense Highlighter (from www.inglot.ie at €20), and add a soft bronze/brown eye shadow to the outer eye socket.

When adding eyeliner to the top eyelid, slightly pull the eye out to the side with your finger and start the liner from the inside out. Give the liner a few seconds to dry and then gently smudge over your line with a cotton bud. Smudge soft brown eyeshadow under the eye. Never use liquid liner under the eyes, only on the lids.
