Mart manager Bernie Fahey described the show of cattle on offer at last Thursday’s show and sale of Belgian Blue and Limousin bull and heifer weanlings as an outstanding yard of exceptional quality stock.
Breeders from nine different counties exhibited on the day, with Gort noted a hub for top end show and fatstock cattle. Buyers were spread out from 20 counties, south and north, following the lifting of restrictions of movements of feeding and breeding animals across the border.
The 424 animals met with a clearance rate of 97%. Average price in the bull ring came to an impressive €5.77/kg, peaking at €8.62 and heifers averaged €6.45/kg across all lots on offer.
Farmer buyers were most prevalent in the heifer ring, with top end heifers being sourced for showing. In the heifer ring, weanling heifers 300-400kg saw Belgian Blue-crosses average €7.90/kg, with Charolais-crosses averaging €5.74/kg.
Limousin-cross of this weight averaged €5.60/kg, with the top price per kilo of this weight being a Belgian Blue-cross weighing 315kg selling for €6,000 (€19.05/kg), with another Belgian Blue cross weighing 390kg €7,300 (€18.72/kg).
Lots between 400-500kg saw Belgian Blue heifers again out in front, trading at an average of €7.16.kg, with Charolais and Limousin-crosses averaging €4.88/kg and €5.38/kg respectively. Heavier heifers over 500kg saw Belgian Blue types average €6.15/kg, with Limousin heifers averaging €4.99/kg.
Top call of the sale overall was a purebred Belgian Blue heifer born February 2025 and weighing 485kgwhich sold for €8,800 (€18.14/kg).
The bull ring saw Belgian Blue-crosses out on top again, with bulls between 300-400kg averaging €6.98/kg, with Limousin-crosses averaging €5.79/kg and Charolais-crosses close behind at €5.43/kg.
Heavier bulls between 400-500kg saw Blue types average just shy of €5/kg at €4.98/kg, with Limousin-crosses of the same weight com ing in 2c/kg below Blues.
