After unbelievable crowds in Carrick-on-Shannon all day Sunday, it’s the turn of the auctioneers to call the tunes on Monday as the 20th Winter fair kicks off at the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society’s showgrounds in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Over 350 heifer weanlings will go under the hammer, with some of the best suckler-bred weanlings in the country going under the hammer during the day.
The ring is thronged again with spectators, exhibitors and customers.
The top call so far has gone to the overall champion Limousin from Derick Forde in Co Galway.

His February 2025-born Trueman Idol daughter weighed 499kg and sold for a whopping €23,000 or just over €46/kg.
It’s another Limousin that’s currently sitting in the second-highest price position. Patrick Hughes’s Claddagh McCable heifer was born in April 2025. She weighed 430kg and sold for €14,000.
Earlier Liam and Fergal McDermott from Killeshandra, Co Cavan, took home €11,000 for their January 2025 Charolais heifer bred by Cloonradoon Ricky. She found her new home in Co Limerick.
It was another Cavan heifer who hit the next highest price so far.
Eddie and Ben Lynch’s March 2025-born Limousin heifer weighed 400kg and sold for €9,100. She is sired by Pabo Rocknroll.
