Big night in the west to celebrate 50 years of the Charolais breed in Ireland
The great and the good from the Irish Charolais Cattle Society gathered in Carrick-on-Shannon over the weekend, where they celebrated 50 years of the breed in Ireland.
Organised by the local branch, presentations were made to all the society presidents still living.
The Dealer hears that not alone are most Charolais pedigree herds now in the west, the office of the society president is also drifting more to the west. Currently, the role is filled by Martin O’Connor from Mayo. His predecessor was Michael McGirl from Leitrim.
Former presidents
Other former presidents attending the anniversary event were: Sean Fitzgerald, Dublin; Jim Ryall, Cork; Brendan McFeeley, Donegal; Joe Gilfinnan, Roscommon; Jon Regan, Leitrim; Martin Ryan, Tipperary; and Jerry O’Keeffe, Limerick.
Jimmy Kelly from Kildare and Tipperary’s Arthur Finnan weren’t there to hear Martin O’Connor urge breeders to concentrate on breeding easy fleshing cattle to suit the current market.
Nevertheless, the afterglow of the previous Saturday’s bumper Christmas cracker sale in Elphin was palpable.
