Yun Gaasbeek from Tramore Educate Together National School, Co Waterford is the winner of this year's An Post writing competition. The result was announced on 11 June.
With more than 8,000 pupils across 300 primary schools in Ireland, the competition is promoting literacy, according to Sophie Lawler of An Post.
"We at An Post have been committed to the promotion of improved literacy and writing skills over many years. This competition reaches out to our communities and encourages our primary school students to use their writing skills to help build a future for us all. We are delighted at the continued success and popularity of the entire event,” she says.
The theme for this years competition was ‘Nurturing the Community’. An Post asked pupils to submit a letter explaining how they will contribute to the growth, wellbeing and sustainability of our island.
Prize fund
A prize fund of €3,000 was shared among the winners. Teachers who submitted entries were also entered into a draw with a chance of winning one of two weekends away worth €300.
The overall winner is one of 10 gold and silver award winners drawn from schools across the country, with age group winners from Limerick, Cork, Mayo, Carlow, Dublin, Galway and Waterford.
