Science Week hosted by Teagasc runs as part of the farming festival

Teagasc is hosting a Science Week from 7-14 November as part of their Festival of Farming and Food.

The event is tailored towards all ages, with different days dedicated to adults, kids or secondary school students.

Participants can expect to learn about topics such as milk production, the importance of forestry or take part in quizzes.

All events are free, but must be pre-booked. There will be online as well as in-person events and participating children must be accompanied by an adult.

Highlights

The Government campaign ‘Creating our Future’ will be part of the festival. Adults with an interest in food, agriculture and the environment are encouraged to take part. The aim of the event is to flesh out ideas on which route scientists should take in the research of environmental and agricultural issues.

Secondary school students or adults will gain an insight into the horticulture industry through the online event The Wonder of Horticulture. Guest speakers will include Darach Lupton from the National Botanic Gardens, PhD student Sam Belton and Lael Walsh who works in horticultural science in Teagasc Ashtown. This will be a brilliant event for anyone interested in a horticulture career.

Facts About cows, milk and grass is suitable for children aged 4-10 years. This interactive event is run by Teagasc and VistaMilk SFI Research Centre scientists and aims to answer all the questions kids have about dairy production. Ultimately, children will leave knowing exactly where the pint of milk they drink or the butter on their toast comes from.

Catriona Boyle, science communications and outreach officer at Teagasc said: “We are very excited to launch our full range of events and activities for Science Week. There is something for everyone, from primary school level, to second level and up to an adult audience. Many of our events are online so are accessible nationwide. We encourage teachers to broadcast our events to their classes.”
