The 2019 potato harvest from the EU’s top potato producing countries (UK, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands) is set to reach 26.9 million tonnes.

This is an increase of 10% on last season and a 1.8% increase on the five-year average.

According to the North-western European Potato Growers, the potato harvest across the EU has been equally as staggered as Ireland.

Many areas across the EU were still irrigating crops at the start of September but broken weather during October has now led to harvest delays in most areas.

Last week, as much as 60% of the potato crop in Belgium and the Netherlands had yet to be lifted.

In general, quality reports are good.

However, extra monitoring will be required during storage as some rots have already been reported as much of the potatoes came into stores in wet conditions.
