Mart manager Sean Leahy said that those heifers that were well-grown, with good EBIs and good figures sold from €1,400 to a top price of €1,940, which was paid for a top-quality heifer with 8,000kg of milk in the background.

Light and plain heifers sold to a low of €1,000 per head. The majority of average-quality heifers sold from €1,300 to €1,400.

Sean said that of the 140 animals that passed through the ring, about 120 of these were AI-bred, showing the quality of stock on offer. In terms of calving dates, the majority were from the end of January to the end of March.

The cow on the left is a third calver, EBI €18, sold for €1310. The cow on the right is a second calver, EBI €40, sold for €1,100.

Demand was mostly Munster-based, with some farmers from as far away as Cavan buying at the sales.

Commission rates are 1.5% to the seller and 2.5% to the buyer.
