Shed of the week - Ballina

In the heart of Mayo, Ballina Men’s Shed radiates the essence of community spirit. Founded in 2012 and now in it’s fifth year, the Ballina Men’s Shed was founded after a group of men were inspired by the successes of other sheds across the country.

“We are a thriving little club and there is a great sense of camaraderie among all of our members. There is a positive atmosphere and we all work together,” says Ivan Beattie, chair and co-founder of the shed.

“We hoped to get men talking about their concerns and get them out to socialise. Men don’t talk face to face, we talk shoulder to shoulder and this is what we based our shed around.”

Having swept up the People’s Choice award at the Fisherman’s Friend Sheds Series awards this year for their entry entitled Water and Turf, this group of men have gone from strength to strength.

Community involvement is of key importance. With the help of project leaders like William, who has experience in woodwork, the club make glas-approved bird and bat boxes.

The shed has recently undertaken a new project making fairy houses and doors. Launching in May, this will be an exciting new attraction for children in the area. The money raised from this will go to the local St Vincent de Paul.

The Shed is always keen to grow and keep all interests catered for. They hold a variety of courses, including cookery and beekeeping classes. Members are also involved in the local walking club, Moyvalley Striders.

Seamie, who is a trained walking leader, said: “With the evenings getting longer, we are able to take trips out into the country to appreciate all the sights that we have around us – it’s important to have a healthy body and mind.”

Ballina Men’s Shed recently moved to a new location after renovating an old cinema. Located on Teeling Street, Ballina, the shed is open everyday from 10am-2pm. Contact Ian on 085-1741 941 for more information.
