Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has joined officials from his Department, Teagasc and co-ops nationwide for a meeting on the fodder crisis.
The group, meeting in Teagasc’s Moorepark base in Co Cork on Wednesday morning, is assessing the level of fodder available nationally.
Dairygold has already announced that it has sourced fodder abroad for its farmer suppliers.
The first of 2,500t of hay and haylage will arrive in Ireland tomorrow and be distributed to its branches.
The Irish Farmers Journal understands that eight loads of 20t each will arrive on Thursday, following by 15 to 20 loads on Friday and Saturday.
Similar amounts are expected to arrive in the early days of next week.
At today’s meeting co-op representatives are expected to outline the current level of fodder supplies in their catchment areas, while Teagasc is expected to give the Minister an update on demand for fodder and also potential supplies of any excess fodder which could be mobilised.
