Unusually the eastern half of the country has borne the brunt of this bad weather, as the highest amount of snow fell from storm Emma fell in the Wicklow Mountains, with 69cm or two and quarter feet recorded.

Johnstown Castle in Co Wexford experienced the highest monthly rainfall at 169.8mm, 215% of its long-term average. Dunsany in Co Meath endured the highest rainfall recorded across the country in any one day with 53.2mm. This was in contrast to the west of the country where the lowest rainfall was recorded, with 51mm at Mace Head in Co Galway .

Nineteen wet days at Dublin Airport

Wet days (1mm or more) ranged from 11 days at Mace Head, Co Galway to 19 days at Dublin Airport and Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry.

There was a marked increase in rainfall for the east of the country compared to 2017, where 690.5mm of rain was recorded in six Met Éireann stations, compared to 446mm recorded in the same stations a year previously.

March was also an exceptionally cold month with temperatures between 2°C and 3°C colder than average, with Knock Airport recording the lowest average air temperature of 3.9°C (1.7°C below average) while Valentia Observatory in Kerry saw the highest mean temperature of 5.7°C, which made it its coldest since 1962.

Severe frost

The lowest air temperature reported was -7°C at Cork airport, its lowest March temperature since 1962, while the lowest ground temperature was -13.2°C in Markree, Co Sligo, its lowest March temperature since 2013.

Days of ground frost ranged from 10 days at Malin Head, Co Donegal to 26 days at Oak Park, Co Carlow.

The number of days with air frost ranged from three days at Malin Head, Co Donegal to 18 days at Moorepark, Co Cork.
