For the 54th successive year the West of Ireland Registered Suffolk Sheep Breeders Club held its premier show and sale at Roscommon Mart on Saturday 9 August.
Supreme champion of the show went to Clodagh and Mark Óg Grealy of the Seafront Flock, for their January-born twin lamb, sired by Oakbridge 16 Goliath out of a dam from the flock of Mark Grealy. This champion sold for €1,850 to a commercial farmer from Co Cavan. He also captured the male champion rosette and was first in the open ram lamb class.
Reserve supreme champion went to James Rooney of the Benwiskin Flock. James’s January-born twin lamb sired by Harpercroft Gold out of a home-bred dam, was the reserve male champion and was placed first in the Recorded Class and was sold to a Roscommon commercial sheep breeder for €1,100. James sold a second ram lamb for €1,000.
The first class paraded under the watchful eye of judge Stephen Govin from the Coolmeen flock was the ewe lamb class with the red rosette going to Zachary and Bernadette Silke from the Sacre-Coeur flock, for their late-December-born single stylish ewe lamb sired by Columbkille Giorgio out of a Benwiskin Ewe. This lamb sold to a Galway breeder for €900. The Silke’s sold a second ewe lamb, born in January, sired by Columbkille Giorgio out of a ewe from the Priorview flock also for €900
The winner of the Hogget ram class went to Leitrim breeder Charles Reilly sired by a homebred ram and out of a ewe from the Windfield flock.
The novice class winner was Jason Satchwell from Creggs. Jason’s January-born twin lamb sired by Oranmore Harun out of an ewe from the Sacre-Coeur flock sold for €860. Another ram lamb from Jason’s flock sold for €700. This flock is the re-established flock of the late David Satchwell who presented and sold ram lambs at the first sale of this club. Michael Murphy’s Moneen flock took second place in the open ram lamb class and sold for €1,000 to a Roscommon breeder.
Next day out for the club is at Athenry Mart on Friday 22 August, show at 6pm and sale at 7pm.
