The Dealer heard this week that plans to increase the pay for some meat factory workers who are here via the work permit system went down like a lead balloon among senior management in the meat factories in recent days.

New minimum salary thresholds were announced last week, with an increase of €2,691 for non-European Economic Area work permit holders in meat processing and horticulture.

It means from March 2026, the minimum pay for these workers rises to €32,691. With 1,000 meat factory permit workers here, it means a rise in labour costs of almost €2.7m.
