DEAR EDITOR

As farmers, hauliers, contractors and business owners unite in protesting the high fuel prices and lack of Government intervention, it strikes me that many of our elected officials simply do not understand what is at stake.

In interviews, countless protesters expressed the dire straits our ongoing fuel crisis has caused, with many stating that they are currently operating at a loss, and will be out of business in three to six months, should current trends continue.

These protesters aren’t just determined; they are desperate.

In the years following the 2008 financial crisis, the farming sector and many others saw an increase in mental health issues, as people lost their livelihoods and businesses.

Without meaningful Government support to help businesses, farms and families survive, I fear that we may face a similar crisis in the near future.

The delays faced by myself and other motorists pale in comparison to the consequences of inaction – I would rather spend every day driving behind tractors and truckers, than spend one day driving behind a hearse.
