Not enough is being done for forgotten farmers, who missed out on incentives such at the Installation Aid Scheme in 2008 and young farmer incentives in the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), an IFA meeting heard in Claremorris, Co Mayo, on Tuesday night.
The issue of support for forgotten farmers was raised on a number of occasions, with calls for more support in the next CAP for them.
Farmers also voiced concern from the floor that the European Commission’s CAP limit proposals are much too high, with some farmers voicing opinions that the limit should be reduced to “the equivalent of the average industrial wage’’.
In response to the concerns, the IFA’s Gerry Gunning and Kevin Kinsella said: “The IFA is not opposed to capping payments, but you must realise that redistribution of these payments would only amount to an increase of about €130/farmer per year.”
