Dipping compliance
This week’s sheep feature relates to sheep dipping and controlling external parasites.
Safe use and disposal is important when dealing with dipping products. Health concerns with organophosphate-based products are well documented, and care should be taken with necessary precautions where dealing with all dipping products.
Many standard ventilation masks are targeted at dust protection, so ensure masks are fitted with chemical protection filters.
With regard to the safe disposal of dip, the Department of Agriculture advises that dip should be landspread – diluted to one part dip and three parts slurry or water – and applied at a rate not exceeding 5,000 litres/ha (440 gallons per acre) of spent dip, which is equivalent to 20,000 litres/ha (1,760 gallons per acre) of diluted dip.
Spent dip should be spread as soon as possible, adhering to rules for applying organic manures. The Department also advises to exclude grazing livestock from the area for at least 28 days.
Farmers in Northern Ireland should note that if they want to purchase dip or partake in sheep dipping, they must hold a certificate of competence in the safe use of sheep dip.
