Numbers and prices remained firm in Mayo-Sligo Mart, Ballina, for both store and fat lambs, with greatest demand being for medium to short-keep store types, with very light lambs a tougher trade, much like is being seen across the country.
Some 740 sheep were on offer in the north Mayo mart, with the majority of these being factory lambs, with lower numbers of culls.
Factory agents were prevalent ringside for heavy lambs and those in the 45kg to 49kg bracket that were well fleshed, while larger finishers scooped up the majority of forward store types above 40kg.
Heavy lambs over 50kg were in tight supply, but sold well, with the lots on offer generally being well-fleshed types of both rams and ewe lambs, with ewe lambs realising a slightly higher price per kilo, though the majority of heavy lots were ram lambs.
These lots sold from €3.20/kg to €3.60/kg in the main or from €172 to €179/head, with the top price in the fat lambs being a pen of ram lambs weighing 56kg selling for €179/head (€3.20/kg).
There were slightly higher numbers of forward stores between 45kg and 49kg in weight, suitable for short, intensive finishing, with these types realising a price in the range of €3.25/kg to €3.43/kg in the main, with ewe lambs with a good cover of flesh already achieving the higher end of prices.
Lambs in the 40kg to 44kg bracket saw prices slightly easier than their heavier counterparts, with some lambs of this range being of more hill-type genetics.
These types sold from €3.10/kg to €3.35/kg in the main, with some nicer-quality ewes suitable for retaining some 5c to 10c/kg above this.
Lighter stores in the 35kg and under category were a tougher trade, selling below the €3/kg mark on occasion, with these mainly being hill lambs.
Cull ewes were solid, with a high of €258/head being paid for fleshed types, with lowland ewes selling mainly from €180/head upwards, with frame and flesh dictating price.
