Michael and Tom Nolan from Ballinaboola, Co Wexford are the malting barley growers of the year, it was announced at the Diageo/Boortmalt malting barley awards which took place at St James’s Gate, Dublin.

They were presented with the award by Noel Grealish TD and Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine on Wednesday 18 January.

Sunil Dwivedi, operations director at St James’ Gate Brewery said that Guinness is built on high, exceptional standards and that the awards were to celebrate the pride growers take in their work each season.

He noted that 8.3m hectolitres of beer are being brewed every year at St James’s Gate and harvest 2025 barley is now being used to brew that beer.

Diageo’s new low-carbon brewery at Littleconnell, Co Kildare will be officially opened later this year.

Stuart Sands, Boortmalt, complimented growers and merchants while bringing the reality of markets to the audience.

Bearish pricing

He described sluggish global demand for malting barley at present which is resulting in bearish pricing.

Boortmalt has temporarily halted expansion in Athy but is hopeful for the future of the sector. Sands highlighted the EU India Trade Deal as a positive step, which should help markets into the future.
