German discounter Lidl has become the seventh largest supermarket in the UK, according to the latest market share figures released by Kantar Worldpanel. Lidl now commands a 5.2% share of the UK’s £182bn grocery market, moving ahead of Waitrose for the first time.
The big four’s – Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrison’s –combined share of the market has fallen below 70% of the UK market as discounters Aldi and Lidl, along with new competition from online retailer Ocado, win new customers.
Aldi, Lidl and Ocado are the only retailers in the UK currently enjoying double-digit sales growth, despite the return of food price inflation thanks to a weakened sterling. For the 12 weeks to 13 August, Aldi recorded sales growth of 17%, while Lidl posted sales growth of 19%. Sales for Ocado are growing at a rate of 13% and the online retailer now commands a 1.4% share of the market.
Grocery inflation in the UK is now running at 3.3%, meaning a further £138 could be added to the average household grocery bill in the UK in 2017.
