With its share of the grocery market at 24.9%, SuperValu may soon topple Tesco off its top spot.

Despite being just 0.1% behind the troubled UK supermarket, this equates to around €10m difference in a market worth almost €10bn.

Almost 50,000 more people shopped in Supervalu in the past year.

Tesco sales are back 3.7% for the period compared to this time last year.

The discounters are also taking chunks from Tesco, with sales up 10.7% in the year.

Combined, Aldi and Lidl now hold 15.7% of the market, and it is expected that this will grow to a maximum 20%.
