Man arrested at protest in Ballyjamesduff in Cavan.

The man was arrested by gardaí for blocking the factory entrance during an independent farmers protest.

The Irish Farmers Journal understands that the man refused to give his name to gardaí or to engage with them.

IFA environment chair Thomas Cooney, rural development chair Joe Brady and Cavan chair Elizabeth Ormiston all visited Bailieborough Garda station on Monday night, where the man was held, to request his release, but, at the time, the man refused any form of support.

Independent Farmers of Ireland

Meanwhile, a group to represent protesting farmers has been established.

The Independent Farmers of Ireland group has three elected representatives and is calling on Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed to “step up”.

The group has also stated that peaceful protests will continue around the country for as long as is needed.

The group added that it currently has ongoing protests outside up to nine factories.

In a press release issued early on Tuesday morning, the group made a list of demands, including:

  • The removal of all injunctions against farmers.
  • An independent review of the beef supply chain, chaired by members of the EU consumer centre for services.
