This week Camera at the Mart was at last Monday night’s weanling sale at Grannard Mart.

Mart Manager Charlotte Kearney said that the sale on Monday was strong, with prices remaining firm in recent weeks. Charlotte said that farmers continue to drive the trade for all quality types.

Northern demand continues to be sporadic at the mart. She said that farmers are particularly active for all good-quality types. Light weanlings were a particularly strong trade, with farmers very active for good-quality types.

Bulls from 200kg to 300kg sold mainly from €3.00/kg to €3.20/kg with better quality types making over €3.30/kg. The main supply of weanling bulls was from 300kg to 400kg. Again these were sought after by farmers. Better quality types sold from €2.55/kg to €3.25/kg. Heavy bulls were a firm trade on the day and sold at similar prices to previous weeks. Bulls over 400kg sold mainly from €2.45/kg to €2.63/kg. Charlotte commented that because prices are so strong, there has been little to no exporter activity in the past few weeks.

The heifer trade was brisk. Charlotte said that the quality of heifers available on the day was very high, and there were buyers active for all types.

Heifers from 300kg to 400kg sold mainly from €2.70/kg to €3.25/kg for good-quality types. Heavier heifers over 400kg were a particularly strong trade also and sold mainly from €2.70/kg to €2.85/kg for good quality types.

Commission rates are €9 to the buyer and 1% to the seller along with a €7 fee for weanling bulls, heifers, store bullocks, heifers cows and sucklers. Commission on sheep is €2/head.
