The Teagasc beef open day at Grange is mainly about production but the UK vote to leave the EU features strongly with beef farmers visiting the Irish Farmers Journal stand.
The immediate effect of a 20c/kg fall in beef price is put down to sterling weakening against the euro.
Longer term there is concern about what markets will do. Next door to the Irish Farmers Journal stand is Bord Bia which will reveal its thoughts at an industry briefing tomorrow.
Many of the meat factories have a booth on the Bord Bia stand and they are unanimous that there is no upside for beef in Brexit.
Late withdrawal
An interesting development is the late withdrawal by Dunbia who are currently engaged in merger discussions with 2 Sisters in Great Britain.
Advice on the beef industry
Teagasc researchers and advisers associated with the beef industry will be available on the day for one-to-one consultations for farmers’ questions and queries.

There are over 120 individual stands for farmers to visit and every stand has the sole purpose to make beef farmers more profitable, sustainable or more health and safety conscious.
Registration will take place beside the forum marquee at the site exit. Admission is free and food and refreshments will be available on site.
