An exemption allowing Scottish farmers to continue burning farm plastics is due to end at the start of next year, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) announced last week.
From 1 January 2019, the burning of farm plastics and most types of agricultural waste will no longer be allowed as SEPA aims to reduce to reduce the environmental impacts of farm waste.
The end to the exemption will affect the disposal of silage wrap, crop covers, fertiliser bags and containers.
To reach the decision, SEPA has worked closely with Zero Waste Scotland and NFU Scotland to have discussions with farmers and crofters with the overall aim of boosting Scotland’s recycled plastics.
