Teagasc are now accepting applications for the professional diploma in dairy farm management programme. Applications must be submitted by Friday 4 June 2021.
The dairy farm management programme is fast becoming a recognised standard for professional dairy farm managers across Ireland.
This blended learning opportunity teaches students best practice dairy herd management in a secure practical learning mentored environment.
Commenting on the programme, Dr Emma-Louise Coffey from Teagasc said:
“The professional diploma in dairy farm management will equip you to realise your management potential in dairy farming. The Level 7 special purpose programme was designed for those intending to manage their family farm, work as a dairy farm manager, or those seeking to enter dairy farming through collaborative farming arrangements.
“Graduates have primarily gone on to work as dairy farm managers on their family farms or dairy farms throughout Ireland, while others have taken up opportunities abroad in countries such as New Zealand and Australia.”

The core element of the programme is a two-year professional work experience with approved dairy farmers. Course work is delivered in three day blocks at Teagasc Moorepark Research Centre and Kildalton College. Students will gain multiple expert perspectives from a professional team of research staff, college lecturers, dairy and financial specialists, with input also from guest lecturers including Irish dairy farmers and industry experts.
What to expect
Throughgout the two-year programme students will work on the following skills:
Technical skills – grassland management, stockmanship, herd health, milking skills.Financial skills – cash flow management, business planning, budget setting.Business skills – planning, goal setting, business performance analysis, work organisation.Interpersonal skills – communication, team management, staff supervision.Quality control skills – safety, food quality, food assurance.Sustainable farming skills – environmental management combined with profitable production.This 30-credit programme consists of four modules; dairy technology, dairy farm management, growing your dairy business and professional work experience. Students will be reimbursed while on placement, on at least two approved host farms.
Requirements
To be eligible for the programme, students must have a minimum qualification of a level 6 advanced certificate in agriculture prior to the course starting. Applications are also welcome from Level 7 and Level 8 agriculture award holders.
On completion of this programme students will be open to serious career progression opportunities; as knowledgeable dairy farmers who want to go on and run successful dairy herds.
The professional diploma in dairy farm management programme is validated and awarded by University College Dublin.
