CLASP/Geevagh Men's Shed Co Sligo

CLASP/Geevagh Men’s Shed, located in Geevagh, Co Sligo, was established after CLASP, the local development company, saw an opportunity to start up a men’s project and submitted a successful funding application to the International Fund for Ireland.

“We tried from an early stage to ensure that the shed was sustainable and could cover the overhead costs in the long term,” says Eamonn Haron, member of CLASP/Geevagh Men’s Shed. “With this in mind, we developed a social enterprise for making and selling wooden garden furniture. The enterprise is going from strength to strength. The local bars and hotels in Carrick-on-Shannon have been very supportive, leading to a loyal client group.”

In partnership with the local ETB and Sligo Leader, Geevagh Men’s Shed has delivered a number of courses.

One of their longest-running courses is the computer course, which encourages men to use computers in their daily lives. “A number of local farmers are involved in the classes as they try to move from a paper-based system to electronic,” says Eamonn.

“We also run a “how to wire a trailer” and creel-making course. We are always trying to think of something new.”

Mental health is an important aspect for CLASP/Geevagh Men’s Shed and a number of the shedders have participated in training days, which have empowered them to address individual group issues.

“Mental health is an ongoing issue and one which we are constantly reviewing, trying to raise awareness within the shed. We are planning a community operation transportation for January and have put a lot of effort into designing a good programme which will hopefully engage with the whole community and lead to positive mental health through physical exercise and good eating,” says Eamonn. The members of the shed range in age from 17 to 85.
