Mart managers are reporting a lightning trade for any quality young dairy stock, with herd clearance sales securing premium prices.

This was evident in Carnew Mart on Tuesday with a clearance sale of a top-quality 90-cow herd with an average economic breeding index (EBI) in excess of €150 averaged almost €1,750 across the entire herd. The 65 cows in milk averaged €1,850.

The entry of 22 first-lactation animals averaged €1,860, while 24 second-lactation animals averaged €2,033.

Within this was a top price of €2,720 for a second-lactation cow sired by LWR with an EBI of €200.

The herd’s 40 AI-bred maiden heifers with EBIs over €180 averaged €1,055.

This group of freshly calved first and second-lactation cows sold from €2,200 upwards with the highest-price cow selling for €2,720 positioned on the right of the group.

Demand

Manager David Quinn said the sale was a genuine clearance of one of the top 20% of herds in the country, with demand massively exceeding supply.

Vibrant trade

A similar vibrant trade is apparent in other sales. George Candler, auctioneer in Kilkenny Mart, said there is an insatiable demand for quality young stock.

An entry of 40 dairy stock in this week’s sale averaged €1,710 with quality young cows selling upwards of this price and to a top of €2,400 for a freshly calved second-lactation Friesian cow.

The average price of €1,550 per head was over €200 per head higher than the 2020 sale

Reporting from New Ross’s annual dairy show and sale, manager Richard Kirwan said the trade for an entry of 100 head was helped by strong interest from northern buyers and producers in border counties.

The average price of €1,550 per head was over €200 per head higher than the 2020 sale. British Friesian-bred young dairy stock sold from €1,400 to €1,600 with high-yielding Friesians selling to €2,225.
