There will be no let-up in the bad weather this week with more rain forecast for most days across the country.

The west of the country is set to experience the worst of the rainfall, with the east and south set to be the driest.

However, at this stage what farmers need is good drying conditions for saturated land to dry out and whether 1mm or 10mm of rain falls, it prevents land from drying.

With many herds heading towards and passing the 50% calved mark, a huge number of farmers have no grazing done yet because land is just too wet.

As we head into the end of February and early March, all farmers will be looking for an improvement in the weather in order for grazing to improve.

While February has been very wet, all is not lost in terms of spring grazing as it is still relatively early in the year.

If the next few weeks come normal, let alone good, then most farmers will be back on track .

However, having said that, it is important that farmers remain to be proactive and waiting until conditions to be perfect is just not feasible because they might not be perfect for weeks to come.

Farmers should continue to walk farms regularly and make a grazing assessment based on ground conditions.

For most farmers, on/off grazing is necessary in order to avoid damage or poaching and to ensure that grass can be let into cows.

The one big positive with the current weather is that temperatures are warmer than normal, so while it is wet, at least its not cold which means grass growth rates are in the low teens.
