The decaying remains of a dead calf have been found dumped on the side of the N53 Dundalk to Castleblayney road, near the townland of Rassan.

It is believed that the remains, which were discovered mixed in with other discarded items, were dumped on the busy stretch of road on Sunday evening.

Although they do not appear to be fresh remains, Louth County Councillor Tomas Sharkey, who discovered them, said: "It looks like someone dug up waste from a yard and dumped the waste there. It looks like old waste dumped fresh."

Cllr Sharkey also said: "As a councillor I come across moments of sorrow, celebration, achievement and frustration. This is one of the moments that has made me physically sick. A load of waste on the side of the N53 with a dead and rotting calf in it. Nothing excuses this."

Louth County Council is currently investigating the incident and has appealed for anybody with information to contact them.
