The Beef Plan movement has labelled potential conditions on the €100m beef fund as ‘discriminatory’ against suckler farmers.
It had been thought that the €100m fund would provide retrospective payments for beef farmers who incurred losses due to Brexit uncertainty.

However, is has emerged that a number of preconditions, including the reduction of suckler numbers, may be set in order to avail of the fund.
“We would like to see the minutes of the meeting that Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan had with his colleagues where these conditions were decided,” Hugh Doyle of the Beef Plan said.
“We’re very disappointed with the way suckler farmers are being treated and feel that the conditions are discriminatory.”
He added that, according to the organisation’s calculations, €100m won’t be enough to adequately covers losses incurred by beef farmers due to Brexit.
