Emergency aid for the beef, dairy and fishing sectors will be sought by the Government from Brussels in the event of a no-deal Brexit, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar told the IFA AGM on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said a no-deal Brexit and the application of WTO tariffs would add €1.7bn to the cost of Irish exports into the UK market.
When asked if intervention was an option for Irish beef, Minister Creed said intervention has its uses but that Ireland needs exceptional aid. “We want to keep our product on UK supermarket shelves,” he said.
