The Department of Agriculture recently published all three winter cereal recommended lists for 2018. They contain two new provisionally recommended wheat varieties, along with one barley and one oat variety.
There are nine recommended winter wheat varieties for 2018 (Table 1), which include Bennington and Torp with provisional recommendation.
There are seven winter barley varieties, including the newly recomended KWS Kosmos (Table 2), which has provisional recommendation. And Keely has been added to the winter oats list (Table 3), again with provisional recommedation.
Spread the risk
It is important for any grower with a sizable acreage to have a spread of varieties and not to rely too heavily on ones that are not well proven over time. Having a number of varieties is important because of unpredictable management pressures or yield variability or both.
There are additional concerns with large areas of wheat this coming year due to the continuing march of septoria resistance. This is something that every wheat grower must be conscious of, especially in terms of variety choice, planting date and the dependence on that crop. Having a spread of crops that suit soil types is always good farming practice.
For any crop, varieties must be chosen for a combination of yield and other characteristics to help plan management. While yield is important, there is little guarantee that a yield difference of even two points will happen in practice in any year. Critical factors in wheat are yield, standing power, relative maturity and resistance to septoria, yellow rust, mildew and ear blight.
Details of the individual wheat varieties are shown in Table 1.

Quadra still top of winter barley list
The winter barley list is broadly similar to last year, with the addition of KWS Kosmos, a new conventional six-row variety. The six-row hybrid Quadra remains just ahead of Volume and Kosmos on yield. Details of the recommended varieties are shown in Table 2. Many varieties are down a point on yield.
KWS CASSIA: Had a good year commercially again in 2017. Moderately early maturing and it has excellent quality, with big bold grain and very high specific weight. Straw is short and stiff with moderate resistance to breakdown. It is susceptible to rhyncho, moderately susceptible to mildew and has good resistance to brown rust and net blotch.
