France seeks to introduce stricter labelling laws for vegan products
French MPs are seeking to introduce measures which would make it illegal for plant-based substitutes from using words such as steak, bacon or sausage to describe their products.
MPs in France are seeking to introduce a law banning the practise of vegetarian and vegan food manufacturers using terms referring to meat, such as vegan burgers, vegan sausages or vegan bacon.
"The names associated with products of animal origin cannot be used to market food products containing a significant proportion of plant-based materials," states the amendment adopted at an initial committee stage last week.
The proposed language ban would also apply to dairy alternatives.

If they no longer eat meat, where is the problem of no longer using words related to the meat diet?
It was introduced by MP Jean-Baptiste Moreau, who is also a cattle farmer and president of a farmers' co-op.
Moreau said: “I do not see how this measure prevents the success of vegan products. If they no longer eat meat, where is the problem of no longer using words related to the meat diet?”
He also argued that the use of such phrases was misleading to consumers.
Refusals to comply with the ban could lead to fines of up to €300,000.
