Calf numbers have started to increase at marts throughout the country. Demand from exporters is strong, but even with low numbers of Friesian bull calves on offer so far, prices are under pressure.

ICBF data shows that of the Friesian bull calf sales recorded in the past week, the average calf sold for €66/head, which is nearly €40/head back on the same week last year.

Calf quality and age are still the main factors affecting prices, with buyers focusing on stronger and older calves, with much reduced demand for light calves that look very young and soft.

Lesser-quality Friesian bulls are selling from €45 to €55/head. The number of Angus and Hereford on offer is still low and prices range from €150 to €170 for heifers and from €200 to €230 for bull calves.
