A motorist struck a number of straying sheep just after 3am on the N13 dual carriageway outside Letterkenny on Monday at 3.30am.
Three of the straying sheep were killed instantly when the man’s Vauxhall Astra car ploughed into them.
The man was not injured, but was left shaken by his ordeal and his car was not drivable after the collision.
The sheep have now been removed and gardaí in Letterkenny have appealed for the owner of the dead animals to come forward.
A Garda spokesman appealed to farmers to ensure that their animals do not stray on to public roads.
“This man was very lucky that he was not seriously injured. This could have been so much worse.
“His car is completely destroyed and he could not drive it away.
“We are appealing to farmers to ensure that their livestock is properly penned in and cannot stray.
“This man had a relatively lucky escape, but he could have been seriously injured or worse,” he said.
