The Kilmeaden cheddar brand triumphed over stiff competition at the recent Nantwich Cheese Show, landing the Kerrygold Cup for the best Irish cheddar. It also won other trophies awarded for the best vintage, overseas and mild cheddar.
The Nantwich Cheese Show, which was held in Cheshire, England, on 30 and 31 July, attracted over 5,000 entries of different cheeses from all around the world.
Gerry Warren, cheese grader for Glanbia Ireland, said: “We are delighted to have achieved such strong performance at the Nantwich Show, there was great competition from both Irish and UK cheddar producers.”
The Kilmeaden Mature Red cheddar claimed the Kerrygold Cup at the show.
The judges found that the texture and flavour of the Irish cheddar made it stand out among the rest, with Warren commenting: “This is due to quality of the milk from our dedicated farmers.”
A number of accolades was also awarded to top-quality cheddar-producing facilities at Rocklands, Co Wexford, and Ballyragget, Co Kilkenny. Six gold medals were awarded to the familiar Wexford mature, mild white and Kilmeaden cheddar.
Cheddar types ranged from vintage to mild, winning four silver and three bronze medals with one cheddar being highly commended.
“We strive every day for excellence, our talented teams in both Wexford and Kilkenny take pride in their attention to detail ensuring top-quality cheddar is produced for our customers," he said.
